The Bird City Maryland Logo
The Bird City Maryland logo was designed by Daria Parsa. It captures several aspects of Maryland and Bird Cities in a simple yet informative design. The Bird City logo has become a readily recognizable symbol of Maryland communities committed to providing a more sustainable future for the people and birds in their community and surrounding areas.
The background colors symbolize the water (blue), land (green), and air habitats from the Atlantic coast to the the mountains of western Maryland.
The leaves represent the White Oak (Quercus alba), Maryland’s state tree. Oak trees (genus Quercus) host more caterpillar species than any other tree genus and provide food and shelter for our native birds. Oaks and other native trees are vitally important in providing sufficient food resources to feed nestlings.
The houses represent residential development, from small towns to our largest city, Baltimore. The goal of the Bird City program is to find a sustainable balance for communities, their people, and the natural world.
The Common Yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas) can be found throughout the entire state during the nesting season, from April through August. It occupies thick vegetation in wide range of habitats from wetlands to prairie to pine forest. The Common Yellowthroat was one of the earliest species of birds to be described from the New World and was initially dubbed the Maryland Yellowthroat, since it was first found here.
