Salisbury earns Bird City Maryland designation

Residents vote for Great Blue Heron as the City’s signature bird

ANNAPOLIS, MD, April 12, 2021 – Bird City Maryland is excited to announce the City of Salisbury has earned recognition as a Maryland Bird City, the first Bird City on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The designation is a recognition of Salisbury’s success in enhancing the city’s environment for birds and educating the public about the interactions between birds and people and about the contributions birds make to a healthy community. The official recognition will take place at the April 12th City Council meeting, held virtually via zoom.

“The City of Salisbury is committed to enhancing our environment for generations to come. This designation is another opportunity for us to make that declaration loud and clear. Thank you to Alyssa Hastings, our Sustainability Specialist, our Green Team, and our engaged community members that are passionate about environmental progress in Salisbury and on the Eastern Shore” said City Administrator Julia Glanz. Salisbury has also earned designations as Bee City USA in 2018 and Tree City USA in 2019. The City also has an official City Bird. Salisbury residents selected the iconic Great Blue Heron from five candidate bird species.

Chris Eberly, Executive Director of the Maryland Bird Conservation Partnership, stressed, “The City of Salisbury and their Green Salisbury initiative have set the bar quite high as a model for sustainable communities. We are proud to add Bird City Maryland designation to their growing list of achievements.”

Bird City Maryland is a program of the Maryland Bird Conservation Partnership that helps build sustainable communities and connect people with nature. The goal of Bird City Maryland is to make communities healthier for people and for birds. Bird City Maryland website: https://marylandbirds.org/bird-city-maryland
